Mentoring is a learning relationship, generally focused on long term career development. The primary purpose is to drive personal growth by building skills, knowledge and understanding.

Successful mentoring relationships go through four recognized phases. These are the preparation, negotiation, enabling growth, and closure. These sequential phases build on each other and vary in length.

Mentors will facilitate your thinking and provide opportunities for you to practice what you learn. You should expect a mentoring relationship based on trust, confidentiality, mutual respect and sensitivity. You will be expected to take increasing responsibility for your own self-reflection and development.

Career Success vs Job Satisfaction

Job satisfaction is the feeling of fulfillment or enjoyment that you derive from your job. Objective career success is assessed by measures such as level of pay and hierarchical progression.

Subjective success, on the other hand, is based purely on your opinions about your own career. The definition of subjective is something that is based on your personal opinion. It lacks facts so it is impossible or extremely difficult to measure.

The relationship between objective and subjective success is perhaps somewhat unexpected. It is believed that growth in your objective success actually has a relatively small impact on subjective success. Earning more and getting promoted will boost your happiness but not as much as if you are happy with your job.

Growth in subjective success has a much larger impact on your objective success. In other words, when you are happy in your work you will also end up earning more and getting more promotions.

This makes sense. When you are genuinely enjoying your work you tend to be more willing to learn new disciplines and work long hours. This will in turn help you to be more objectively successful. The major implication then is for you to pursue work that you genuinely enjoy as it will likely make you objectively successful, too.

Impairment of Subjective Success

Several factors will impair your subjective success. Low participation in training and development activities as well as low networking behavior are two such factors. This may happen when you are in your comfort zone. This is that place where familiarity and routine provide you with a sense of safety and predictability.

A reluctance to take part in training and development could be indication of close-mindedness. It will also likely results in less growth in skills and knowledge. Low networking may lead to encountering fewer opportunities.

Low political knowledge and having few or no mentors also will lower subjective success. Effective mentors can be helpful in providing advice on relationships and politics along with technical issues.

Boost Your Career Outcome

Research have found that subjective success is unaffected by gender, marital status or having children. In other words, there are no excuses. You are able to experience career satisfaction irrespective of your background and home situations.

Managers who provide mentoring tends to be higher performers. You should use every opportunity to mentor to experienced greater career success. Also when you offer yourself as a mentor you will learn and grow as a result of the process.

Your ability to communicate well with others is crucial in the workplace. A strong communicator will be able to speak clearly and with confidence. This will enhance your networking and mentoring skills.

You should aim to develop your skills, as this will make you seem more attractive to current and potential employers. Volunteering is also a great way to boost your confidence and meet new people with similar interests. A few critics consider mentoring to be a somewhat old-fashioned paradigm. An alternative term now in use is peer coaching.

This is define as a voluntary relationship between two or more people with the goal of supporting each other to achieve career objectives. The responsibility is shared, no one is considered the teacher. Each contribute according to their ability.

To set up a peer coaching group, you will have to find one or more individuals who you trust and respect for their knowledge and insight. Each person is given equal time to share and then receive advice on a pressing issue.
