Labour of Love: 2020 Years And Still Counting

Psalm 139: 13 – 16 NIV says “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”

The Perfect Gift To The World

But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth His son, born of a woman, born under the law…” Galatians 4:4

On that very first Christmas The Bright Morning Star is about to burst forth in all its brilliance. The culmination of God’s plan is at hand. The birth of the Christ was planned in eternity, but now is a reality.

The angelic announcement to Zacharias, the aged priest, recorded in Luke chapter 1, was also an announcement to the world that God’s plan of redemption was about to be completed. The “gift of God” was not only for Zacharias and Elizabeth; it was an announcement to the whole world that the birth of Christ was about to take place. God’s prepared plan was very much alive.

The Virgin Mother

Isaiah prophesied “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14)  Matthew states that this verse was fulfilled by the conception of Mary by the Holy Spirit and gives the meaning of Immanuel, “God with us”. Jesus was the union of deity with humanity.

Be it unto me according to thy word.” Mary said this knowing that she would face shame, scorn, and rejection for being found pregnant without a husband. She cared not what men thought or did she only wanted to serve God.

The more you think about Mary’s response the more you will understand what a godly young lady she was. She knew God and she was knowledgeable of the scriptures. You may not know her back ground but her response leaves no doubt about her humble submission to God’s will and her willingness to suffer any consequences as a result of obeying God.

Such obedience is “better than sacrifice”. God will always honour such faith and devotion.

“Mary…was found with child of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 1:18)  As soon as Joseph knew he began making plans to sever his espousal to Mary privately. What changed his mind?

After considering all the preparations God made for the birth of Jesus, bringing understanding to Joseph was not unusual. Pondering his course of action, maybe, he sat in the synagogue and heard this prophecy lesson of the virgin birth.

Understanding, clarity, revelation and truth came in the dream vision Joseph had in which the angel of the Lord appeared and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for that which has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 1:20

There is great importance in Joseph taking Mary in marriage. Although Mary was a descendant of David she was not of the royal line. Joseph was, and by taking Mary in marriage he bestowed upon Jesus the legal right to the throne of David. God sent the angel of the Lord to prepare Joseph to do this.

The Return to Bethlehem

“The king’s heart is in the hands of the Lord, as the rivers of water: he turns it wherever He wishes” Proverbs 21:1 NIV

The prophet Micah had foretold that the Messiah, The Christ would be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2). But Joseph and Mary were living in Nazareth. With God nothing is impossible, nothing will ever surprise him or be unexpected to him who know all things.

Joseph and Mary had no choice, they had to obey the degree to go and be registered as recorded by Luke 1: 12 . You know that “God works in mysterious ways his wonders to perform.”

The Star For The Wise Men

The star first led the wise men from east to west; next led them from north to south; then vanished, reappeared, and stood over the very house where Jesus was born. We can understand God preparing a star for the wise men. They were respected, knowledgeable, influential, wealthy and they were seeking the truth.

The wise men were right in calling it “His star.” This is the glory by which God has shown His presence to men. This is how God appeared to Abraham (Genesis 15:12-18); to Moses at the burning bush (Exodus 3:1-5); to the Israelites as they left Egypt (Exodus 14:19-26); to Israel at Mt Sinai (Exodus 34:5-9) and filled the Holy of Holies in the Tabernacle and Solomon’s Temple (Exodus 40:34-38; 1 Kings 8:10-13).

The wise men were looking for the birth of the King of the Jews. When they saw “His star” they made all haste to follow so they could worship Him who was born King of the Jews. God prepared their lavish gifts to financed Joseph and Mary while they were exile in Egypt. This is the God of Prevision and Providence, Jehovah Jirah.

The Angelic Choir

“Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.” (Luke 2:14 NIV)

Why would God send an angel choir to shepherds? They were looked upon as poor and ignorant. Surely God wants you to know that Jesus came to be a Savior to all people, the lowly as well as the noble.

Besides, Jesus is “the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). He is also “the good Shepherd, (who) lays down His life for the sheep.” (John 10:11).

And so, in the midst of the blazing glory of God these angels sang His praises. These shepherds went immediately to see the baby Jesus. After they left they told everyone about the things they had seen and heard.

The Good News to the World

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.

But the angel said to them, “do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Luke 2:8 – 10.

History tells you that the Roman Empire arose to break down borders between nations; build roads for easy travel and provide a peace that allowed a rapid spread of the gospel of Christ to the world.

Many “sons” Are Still Being Born

John 3: 16 says “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Have you contemplated the depth of truths packed within this verse, preserved by God Himself, throughout countless generations? Most importantly, how do you live in the reality that this verse presents. God, who is love, actively demonstrated His love through Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son, and through Him, offered salvation to all mankind.

God knew how helpless humanity is in the face of the devil. Watching mankind hurt, manipulate, use, and kill one another, God could’ve left us to our destruction. He could’ve been repelled and turned away in disgust leaving mankind to consume each other.

God took action from the beginning of time, from that first sin in the Garden of Eden. The first thing He did was to remove the tree of life, lest we be trapped in a life of sin forever. He acted throughout history, weaving a plan and keeping His promise to save His people.

He sent His Son through the Holy Spirit to be born incarnate of the virgin, Mary. His son laid upon the cross, offering a sacrifice of His perfect life for our sinful lives, which was the redemption price for sin.

The death and resurrection of Jesus have paved the way for many sons to be born into the Kingdom of God. John 1: 12 & 13 “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.”

We must be thankful for the perfect gift of salvation given to fallen man who believe and accept Him as their Lord and personal savior. May that new life find you this year if you have not yet found it. May it become more meaningful to you who have already found it because of the Grace of God given in this world.
