From the Cross to the Grave: From the Grave to the Sky!!

“I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death.” Revelation 1:18

The Resurrection Story: Luke 24:1-8

“But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared.  And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?

He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.”

And they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.”

Jesus’ resurrection changed everything in the lives of his followers. One of the most important areas of change, however, was in their memories. Things Jesus had said in his ministry and teaching came flooding back into their minds with clarity, understanding, excitement, and conviction.

Promises that seemed obscure and vague were suddenly made clear and attainable. Prophetic words that seemed undiscoverable were uncovered and seen in their full glory as enlightenment dawned on them. All of Jesus’ ministry, his healing, and his teaching was now fully understood after his resurrection and glorification.

John 11:25-26: “Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,  and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

Easter, or Resurrection Sunday, is a Christian festival commemorating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. It is recorded in the New Testament as having occurred on the third day after his burial following his crucifixion by the Romans at Calvary c. 30 AD.

It is the central hub of the gospel which declares God’s power and presence among his creation. The meaning of the resurrection is God’s restoration of human dignity, peace and destiny. The angel proclaimed that Jesus had been raised form the dead and may gave witness of this fact subsequently.

The Living Hope

1 Peter 1:3 – 5 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,  to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”

Verse 3 gives you a sure hope in the resurrection. Any hope outside of Christ is superficial and temporary and it will not stand the test of time. Your hope does not come from possessions or what you do but who you are in Christ Jesus. Only Christ was able to bridge the gap between sinful man and a holy Creator.

Verse 4 gives an eternal hope in Christ. If you hope in this world, then it is a dying hope, for this world is perishing, it is slowing passing away. The Christian hope is established on the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This hope starts when God’s work of salvation, a new life, as a new creation, in a person’s life.

Verse 5 gives you an enduring hope that is hidden in Jesus. It takes you through bad times, and through every season of life. Satan tempts you continuously; the world lures you most of the time, and your flesh battles you relentlessly. Your enduring hope is in God’s power which is stronger than them all combined.

Alive For All Eternity

1 Corinthians 15:21 – 23: “ For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead.  For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. That the Christ would suffer, that He would be the first to rise from the dead, and would proclaim light to the Jewish people and to the Gentiles.”

These two men in the Bible, Adam and Jesus, are represnetatives. Adam represented the death of man because of his sin, and Jesus represented the salvation of man’s physical body by His resurrection; He makes believers alive for all eternity (Romans 5:12-19).

The resurrection of the believer will be physical, not a spiritual resurrection. Just as certainly as Adam died, so those in Christ will have resurrection life. “All” in one case is the “all” in another case. Everyone dies without exception in Adam, but everyone who believes in Jesus will rise bodily from the dead without exception.

Jesus, the first fruit, rose never to die again. Resurrection is from physical death to immortality. Jesus was the “firstfruits” at the time of His resurrection. The full harvest of the corps of believers was to follow and the full harvest is yet to come.

Facts Not Fiction

The final chapters of all four of the Gospels in the Bible, let’s us know that Jesus’ actions and words were validated and empowered by his resurrection. The struggle between belief and disbelief was always there among his followers for “they were disbelieving and still wondering”. After the resurrection, however, things were different to the believers.

They were reminders of many things which includes not only a prediction of the crucifixion, but also of the resurrection. It is on that basis that they were able to “go and tell all the rest” what they had witnessed.

The believers gave up their lives because they had the proof. They made the Easter confession as a chorus of believers, based on their testimonies. When you give your life to your creator he will take good care of you. You were created to spend eternity with him. Are you prepared?
