Have A Blessed Mother’s Day!!

Exodus 20:12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

The Birth of Mother’s Day

It is recorded that the origin of Mother’s Day took place in the early 1900s. Anna Jarvis of the USA, started a campaign for a special day to be set aside for honoring mothers in 1905. In 1908 a public memorial was held as a dedication for her mother in her hometown of Grafton, West Virginia, USA.

Anna continued to push to have mother’s day be a public holiday and to be officially recognized, as the celebration became increasingly popular in more states. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation making Mother’s Day an official holiday, to take place the second Sunday of May.

Mother’s Day celebration continues to honor motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is dedicated to expressing love and gratitude to mothers for their immense sacrifices. It is celebrated across the world, in more than 50 countries, though not all countries celebrate it on the same day.

Eve – Mother of All the Living

Genesis 2: 21 – 23 ESV: “ So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.  And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man.  Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”

Genesis 1:28,  ESV: “And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

Eve means “life” or “life-giving,” or “mother of all who have life,” and her life is in us all. She was the product of a divine creation. Eve appeared on earth as a complete, perfect woman. She was never a child, or a daughter or a maiden. The first female born into the world was Eve’s first daughter.

Sarah – Mother of God’s Covenanted People

Genesis 17: 15 – 16, 19 ESV:  “And God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name.  I will bless her, and moreover, I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall become nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.

God said, “No, but Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his offspring after him.”

Sarah is a Hebrew name meaning “noblewoman” or “princess”. With respect to the fulfillment of the promise, Sarah embodies the themes of fear and doubt. Abraham her husband, on the other hand, represents those of faith and hope. Sarah is a mother of nations, that is, all who believe in God by faith.

Rebekah – Mother of God’s Chosen Nation

Genesis 25: 21 – 23 ESV:  “And Isaac prayed to the Lord for his wife, because she was barren. And the Lord granted his prayer, and Rebekah his wife conceived.  The children struggled together within her, and she said, “If it is thus, why is this happening to me?”

So she went to inquire of the Lord.  And the Lord said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you shall be divided; the one shall be stronger than the other, the older shall serve the younger.”

Rebekah means “to tie firmly” and “beautifully ensnarling.” Rebekah took the advantage of the opportunity that God brought her way when she bumped into Abraham’s servant as he was looking for a wife for Isaac, his master. Her story is riddled with mistakes and bad choices later, but she is still counted as worthy as a mother, as a woman who left a legacy that pointed her children to Jesus.

Jochebed – Mother of The Jewish Priesthood

Exodus 2: 1 – 3 ESV:  Now a man from the house of Levi went and took as his wife a Levite woman.  The woman conceived and bore a son, and when she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months.  When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a basket made of bulrushes and daubed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and placed it among the reeds by the river bank.

Exodus 2: 9 – 10 ESV:  And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him.  When the child grew older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, “Because,” she said, “I drew him out of the water.”

The name Jochebed means “God’s Glory”.  She is praised for her faith in God. God granted her a number of miracles in connection with the birth of Moses. She gave birth to the three leaders of the Exodus generation: Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.

The Levites who were not priests were given various duties with immeasurable privilege in the caretaking of the tabernacle and its furnishings. During that dispensation, the Levitical priests also served as judges and teachers of God’s law. Through the death and resurrection of Jesus, we all have access to God’s presence, where we can freely enjoy Him forever.

Mary – Mother of Jesus Our Lord And Saviour

Matthews 1: 18 22 ESV:  “Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.

But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

Mary is one of the oldest and most classic names, its meanings include “bitter,” “wished-for child,” and “rebellion.” Mary gave birth to Jesus as a baby and watched him die as her saviour. She was a woman with rare strength and obedience. God rewarded her to be the only person to be with Jesus for his whole life span on earth. Mary is revered for her humility and motherly love and honored by all Christians.
