Galatians 6: 9 “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.“
Our commitment does not end with the pledge we make. Commitment in action leads to better productivity and services. It is the secret key to un-tapping and increasing our potential, both in life and in business. Commitment is a self-fulfilling prophecy for personal satisfaction.
It is reported that in a significant step towards closer global alignment in protecting communities, in January 2021 more than 60 business leaders committed to the stakeholder capitalism metrics. This information was released by the World Economic Forum’s International Business Council.
‘The initiative has brought together for the first time a global, private-sector coalition pushing for international alignment of sustainability standards and reporting,’ explains one spokes’ person. It has among other things an agreement or pledge to do something in the future as commitment to improve conditions where necessary: an engagement to assume a financial obligation at a future date, Allison Bailey, the forum’s ESG explained.
Collective responsibility, also known as collective guilt, (or honor) refers to responsibilities of organizations, groups and societies. In reality collectivity causes all involved to be bound by the collective decisions so everything should be done to ensure that things are done properly.
The Covid – 19 crisis has created opportunities for groups to imagine new forms of creative co-operation that redefine social responsibility. The coming together of cross-sector organisations to deliver solutions and relief in the face of the greatest public health crisis in living memory has shown the strength of collectivity.
The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has taught us much about the power of working together. While certain of its lessons have proven bitter pills to swallow others have been inspirational.
Illustrative of this collaborative approach is the recently formed Global Task Force on Pandemic Response. The task force is spearheaded by the US Chamber of Commerce and the US CEO association Business Roundtable. It works with the US-India Business Council (USIBC) and US-India Strategic Partnership Forum. Deloitte is among the coalition of 40 partner organisations coming together with the task force to deliver resources to areas of the world hit hardest by Covid-19.
The formation of a task force at this scale has reinforced countries’ commitment to fight the pandemic together. It displays and set up a rather high benchmark for public-private partnership. Harnessing the power of collaboration during the Covid-19 pandemic continues to deliver impact, particularly in the field of healthcare and equality.
It launched its Action Groups to share best practices for businesses supporting colleagues where it is most needed at this time. Done correctly, they are valuable means for the private sector to lend specific expertise and modes of operation for the greater good.
Forum For Common Good
The World Economic Forum in February 2020 convened a spectrum of stakeholders to form the Covid Action Platform. As the international organization for public and private corporations this forum is mobilizing all stakeholders to protect lives and livelihood.
“But the sum of many individual actions will not add up to a sufficient response. Only coordinated action by business, combined with global, multi-stakeholder cooperation – at exceptional scale and speed – can potentially mitigate the risk and impact of this unprecedented crisis.”
“Corporations have a responsibility to work with governments and civil society to address the big global challenges while protecting public health and growth” declared this platform.
Moving forward, these forums will use investment tools to measure environmental, social and governance performances. It is believed that measurement must become a focus of businesses if we are to collectively mitigate the impact of not just ongoing and future health crises, but also other interlinked global issues such as climate change.
These innovative alliances entered into by various firms – and across the private and public sectors – extend beyond altruism. They are also aimed at injecting resilience into the very core of all of our businesses, services and global communities.
Of course these efforts can expect some form of unfavourable circumstances or condition that reduces the chances of success or effectiveness. There is no guarantee of 100% success in all the various spheres of operation. However caution is the watch word. They must use all types of internal controls to detect, prevent, and flag any flaw before escalation.
Another possible disadvantage that can develop is lack of consideration. This is concerned chiefly with one’s own personal aggrandizement. Greed and selfishness may step in and counter the success stories. Treating others as you would have them treat you is the Golden Rule that should be operable.
For Individual Survival
Taken from Darwin’s theory of evolution, survival of the fittest is often conceptualized as the advantage that accrues with certain traits, allowing an individual to both thrive and survive in their environment by out-competing for limited resources.
Survival depends a great deal on a person’s ability to withstand stress in emergency situations. Mental skills are much more important than physical skills in survival situations, it is reasoned. A person’s psychological reactions to the stress of survival is what often make them able to utilize the available resources.
You need to adapt to survive in any environment, especially this current state. Maintain a good self-control and let common sense prevail at all times. Be resourceful and take advantage of your surroundings and abilities. Learn as much as you can and have a strong desire to survive.
Make It Personal
A mindset is basically a person’s way of thinking, or a collection of views that shapes an individual’s habits. This dictates how you perceive yourself and the world around you.
A person with a growth mindset believes that with enough effort and perseverance comes improvement. As long as there is motivation and drive, natural qualities can further improve and develop. If you have a growth mindset, adverse situations give opportunities to improve, and a way to overcome challenges.
Having a fixed mindset, however, means that your abilities and attributes can no longer change, no matter how much hard work and effort you put in. Everything, from your talents and intelligence, are set in stone. You think that you are born with a special set of skills, and it’s impossible to change them.
Regardless of your mindset know that you have to commit, collaborate and work collectively for your personal survival. Personal commitment does not necessarily reflect cultural values, attitudes, or beliefs.
